AAFP Approves Hospital Medicine 2015 for 22.5 Prescribed CME Credits

There is no doubt that Hospital Medicine has become an attractive focus for physicians trained in Family Medicine. In fact, according to a recent study by the Council of Academic Family Medicine Educational Research Alliance (CERA) about 9% of graduating Family Medicine residents choose immediately to pursue careers in hospital medicine¹. Additionally, membership data shows that 11.6% of SHM members are Hospitalist Trained in Family Medicine (HTFM) and 59% of all hospital medicine groups employ HTFM². With these numbers in mind, we’re excited to share that the SHM annual meeting, Hospital Medicine 2015, has been awarded AAFP prescribed CME credit.

This year, as a result of work on the part of two SHM committees (Hospitalists Trained in Family Medicine and the Annual Meeting Planning Committee), the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) has approved Hospital Medicine 2015 for 22.5 prescribed credits. This is an important development for HTFM that supports attendance at our most important and relevant annual meeting.

Other benefits of this approval extend outside of our organization and include strengthening our working relationship with the AAFP. Additionally, this recognition helps foster interest in the Hospital Medicine career path for our Family Medicine physicians in training and supports those who have already pursued this clinical focus.

In order to continue to offer these credits at subsequent meetings this Annual Meeting Planning Committee work by HTFM AAFP members must continue. So, if you are an HTFM and AAFP member with an interest in getting involved in the annual meeting planning activities please submit an application next year during the call for SHM committee applications for potential appointment to the 2017 SHM Annual Meeting Planning Committee.

So, HTFMs, be sure to join us at the annual meeting to earn up to 22.5 prescribed CME credits, and remember to connect with other HTFM physicians during any of the clinical sessions or at HTFM-specific events like the HTFM forum on Monday, March 30^th at 4:05 PM (location TBD). Dr. Patricia (Trish) Seymour MD is a graduate of UMASS Medical School and the Worcester Family Medicine Residency program. She has worked as a hospitalist in the Division of Hospital Medicine since 2010. Additionally, she has a master’s degree in neuroscience and behavior.   She serves on the SHM Hospitalist Trained in Family Medicine (HTFM) Committee.

Trish has a strong interest in medical education and serves as the Education Director for the Family Medicine Hospitalist Group. In this capacity she directs the Family Medicine Sub-Internship at Memorial Hospital, works closely with the residents on the inpatient service, teaches in the residency core curriculum, facilitates a small group in the 3^rd year family medicine clerkship, and is a longitudinal preceptor for sub-clinical students. She serves on the residency curriculum committee and the hospital rapid response committee.
