Adverse events in medicare patients

In this cross sectional sampling of hospitalized medicare patients in October 2008, 13.5% experienced an adverse event during their hospital stay (and an equal number experience temporary harm), almost half of which were considered preventable, at a cost of $324 million. Dr. Scheurer is a clinical hospitalist and the Medical Director of Quality and Safety at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina, and is Assistant Professor of Medicine.
