A Day in the Life of a Young Hospitalist

by Joshua Allen-Dicker, MD, MPH I am a young hospitalist who is 16 months into my role at an urban academic medical center. Unlike many of my more-senior colleagues who found their way to hospital medicine by circumstance, luck, or as a second-career path, I have been planning my career in hospital medicine since the beginning of my residency training. The things that drew me to hospital medicine as a trainee—its emphasis on problem-solving, strong communication skills, teamwork and leadership—are still what excite me each day as a young hospitalist. When friends, family and patients ask me about my job, I often tell them about these passions and describe what a “day in the life” looks like for me. While no two days are ever exactly the same in hospital medicine, the following is an account of a Wednesday I had last month. I arrive at the large office I…

A Day in the Life of a Pediatric Hospitalist

by Dr. Erin Stucky Fisher, MD, MHM I am a career pediatric hospitalist. Not one of my days is the same because as a hospitalist I have the opportunity to serve in numerous capacities within my hospital medicine group, my hospital and the fields of pediatrics and hospital medicine. I am one of the senior attendings on the pediatric hospital medicine service coordinating care teams, I serve on committees at my hospital and university, and I am involved in national work affecting the care of pediatric inpatients. So here’s a day in the life of me, Erin Stucky Fisher, pediatric hospitalist: The Morning I start at 6:45 AM, reviewing all teams’ patient list. As the “first call” PHM, I am responsible for assuring all ICU transfers and surgical consults were correctly added in our EMR. I scan the “admits-24hrs-allsites” list – I am responsible for assuring not only our site…

US News Medical Admissions Blog Profiles Hospitalists: All Press is Good Press, Right?

We are clearly in the mainstream!  The Medical School Admissions Doctor blog sponsored by US News and World Report profiled hospital medicine this week in a post entitled, “Get to Know a Day in the Life of a Hospitalist.”  I admit, I had never seen this blog before, but after reviewing the article written by Sylvia Morris, a former hospitalist at Emory, I took the opportunity to peruse other articles in the blog history. The article about a day in the life of a hospitalist is part of a series where they are trying to capture the day-to-day aspects of being a certain type of specialist. Other entries I saw were covering primary care physicians, OB/Gyn, and nocturnists. I also noticed that their target audience is pre-med students and they focus on giving advice on how to get into medical school and showing what life could be like as a…
