SHM’s Before the White Coat podcast, hospitalist satisfaction, Choosing Wisely and Journal of Hospital Medicine research are featured in the latest roundup of media articles about the specialty. After celebrating its six-month anniversary, SHM’s podcast, Before the White Coat, was highlighted in a Modern Healthcare article -- in print and online -- reviewing the inspiration for its development and a few episode highlights. KevinMD.com featured Tracy Cardin’s blog post from The Hospital Leader earlier this month. In her post, she discussed the two requirements she believes are essential for an effective, satisfied hospital medicine group: strong leadership and adequate staffing. Also in the realm of hospitalist satisfaction, Press Ganey CMO Dr. James Marino blogged for Becker’s Hospital Review, noting that a number of hospitalists feel a lack of respect from colleagues; he delves into how he made this discovery and his recommendations. Quality Improvement, Burnout in Healthcare News

by Brendon Shank

Because hospitalists are more frequently managing inpatient care of adults 65 and older, Medscape recently featured Journal of Hospital Medicine research on developing a patient-centered research agenda for improving the care of older hospitalized patients. Another SHM franchise, Project BOOST, was called out as an effective method to reduce hospital readmissions in Advance Healthcare Network’s nurse-targeted publication. Also in the quality improvement space, a HealthAffairs blog post by ABIM Foundation COO Daniel Wolfson highlighted SHM’s work with Choosing Wisely as the primary driver behind a 20 percent reduction in unnecessary lab work at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. A common issue affecting hospitalists, physician burnout, was the subject of a MedPage Today article, featuring commentary from SHM member Dr. Vineet Arora, citing the intensity…

Antibiotic Stewardship, Hospitalists and Quality Improvement in the News

by Brendon Shank
Antibiotic stewardship, SHM’s “Fight the Resistance” campaign and a number of other quality improvement-related topics appeared in hospital medicine media coverage over the last two weeks. Prior to the kickoff webinar of SHM's  “Fight the Resistance” antibiotic stewardship campaign yesterday, multiple press outlets have covered the campaign launch. Hospitalist News, among multiple sources, ran a story on their homepage featuring a campaign overview and how readers can get involved. Last Monday, Medscape released a "Guest Expert Commentary" video of Dr. Eric Howell, SHM’s Senior Physician Advisor, rallying hospitalists and hospital staff to join the fight against antibiotic resistance and download and display the campaign posters. The campaign is also subject of the cover story in the November issue of The Hospitalist (the print version includes a full-size "Fight the Resistance" poster). SHM is also partnering with the CDC, aligning the timing of the campaign around the CDC's “Get Smart About Antibiotics” week. Research originally published in the Journal of Hospital Medicine…
