The actual cost of hospital procedures remain opaque; this recent article in JAMA found the quoted price of a hip replacement varied from ~$10K to ~125K, and a complete bundled price was not available at all from over half of top-ranked hospitals. The lack of transparency in pricing/cost will likely fuel the temptation of consumers to start asking, and shopping, for procedural cost when seeking care (abstract).
