In this evaluation of >2,000 patients in the NSQIP database, of those with appropriate medical VTE prophylaxis, 1.6% developed a VTE, 94% were symptomatic. About half were lower extremity, and 17% were diagnosed after discharge (overall mean time from surgery to diagnosis was 8.6 days). Half of these were associated with a catheter. Overall prevalence of VTE in surgical patients on prophylaxis is low, half of which are associated with catheters (abstract)
