A consensus group has now defined ARDS (The Berlin Definition) by 3 categories of hypoxemia, based on Pa02/Fi02 ratios: mild 200-300mmHg, moderate 101-199, and severe<100. These correlate to mortality rates of 27%, 32%, and 45% respectively. This simple definition is easy to deploy in clinical practice, and can be used for prognostic purposes (abstract)
