STEMI and admission glucose

In this large registry of patients with STEMI, researchers quantified the association of high admission glucose in non-diabetics, and short and long term outcomes. They found an admission blood sugar of >150 (compared to <120) with an in-hospital death OR 2.9 and in-hospital major cardiac event OR 1.9. These persisted at 1 year follow up (death OR 1.5 and major cardiac event OR 1.3). We should be aware of the markedly increased risk of death or major adverse cardiac events (2-3 times higher) in non-diabetic STEMI patients with elevated glucose at admit (abstract)
