The use of clinical informatics, in the form of electronic health records and big data, to strengthen research findings will be highlighted here at the Society of Hospital Medicine (HM) 2017 Annual Meeting. Results from three innovative studies, in particular, will reflect the broad impact this incorporation is having on the practice of hospital medicine, said Margaret Fang, MD, research director of the division of hospital medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, who is chair of the research, innovation, and vignettes section of the conference.

In Hospitalist Programs, Nurse Practitioners Are Growing Even More Important
Some hospitals are launching hospitalist programs that innovatively incorporate nurse practitioners (NP) to cut costs—but successfully integrating NPs into the hospitalist role means getting physicians on board and navigating regulatory hurdles, Lola Butcher reports for Hospitals & Health Networks. According to Tracy Cardin, an acute-care NP and a hospitalist at the University of Chicago Medical Center, the use of NPs in hospitalist programs has been increasing for about 10 years.

Nurse Response Time to Alarms Varies Based on Intuition
Responses to physiologic monitor alarms in children’s hospitals are affected by multiple factors, including the length of time spent working, the severity of the condition, nurse-to-patient ratio, and physical and mental fatigue, according to research published in JAMA Pediatrics.

Physician Assistant Pay Eclipses $100K Annually
Physician assistant compensation has surpassed $104,000 on average amid competition for primary care medical care providers, a shortage of doctors and the nationwide more to value-based care. A new statistical profile of the profession from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants shows certified physician assistants (PAs) earned an average salary of more than $104,000 in 2016.
