The FDA has released an expanded boxed warning on IV Iron dextran products, due to anaphylactic reactions. They are recommending a test dose be given to all patients before full dose injection, and that resuscitation equipment and personnel be available during the infusion (site). IV iron should be reserved for patients with iron deficiency anemia, who are unable to replete their iron stores orally.
