In this systematic review, longer duration (>21 days) vs shorter duration (7-10 days) VTE prophylaxis after orthopedic surgery was associated with significant reductions in all VTE rates (symptomatic and asymptomatic DVT and PE), but 2.4 times the odds of minor bleeding. As with all VTE prophylaxis decisions, duration after orthopedic surgery should weigh the risk of minor bleeding with the benefit of DVT/PE reductions (abstract)
